Semiya (Vermicilli) Upma

semiya-upma.jpg

A simple breakfast recipe. When I don’t have any dosa batter, and can’t think of what else to cook, I make semiya upma. Winkie likes it because of its noodle like look and eats it without a fuss. Here’s how it goes:

Ingredients

Semiya – 1 cup (serves 2 people)
Ghee – 1 tsp
Onion – 1 medium, chopped
Green chilli – 1, chopped
Ginger – 1 inch piece, chopped into small bits
Curry leaves – chopped to bits
Oil – 1 tbsp
Mustard seeds – 1 tsp

Method

1. Roast the semiya in the tsp of ghee until it changes to a golden colour. Set aside.

2. In a pan, heat the oil and ass the mustard seeds. When it bursts, add the onions, ginger, green chillies and curry leaves.

3. Now add the water. This is the proportion. For 1 cup of semiya, its 2 cups of water. Once water stars boiling, add the required salt, and add the roasted semiya.

4. Mix it in and then cover and cook till it is soft and cooked.

5. Serve with pickled or curd.
